Paying tax on money coming from Oz to UK?

Hello all,

Im British.

I went to Australia for a year on a working holiday visa.

April 2010 - April 2011

I am now back in the UK.

If I transfer money from my earnings from my Aussie bank account to my UK bank then will it be treated as income and therefore be taxed?

Any info appreciated,

Many thanks.

  • Hello there

What were the exact dates you left for Australia and returned to the UK?

i left England on the 30th of March 2010 and returned 7th of June 2012.
  • Thanks

No - the money you earned whilst non-resident in the UK is not liable to UK tax, regardless of whether you transfer it to the UK or no. You can go ahead and transfer the money to the UK without any tax complications.

Any UK income earned from 7 June 2012 onwards would be taxable in the UK
  • The dates of travel are interesting, but the dates of employment in Australia are as important in deciding if you were in full time employment abroad. What dates were you employed?

    thank you for the replies.

in australia i was employed during april, may, june, october, november and december 2011.

i made a mistake in my prior posts.

i departed from the uk on the 30th march 2011 (not 2010) and returned on the 7th june 2012.

    thanks for the help.

    Why? From HMRC:
When are you non-resident for UK Income Tax?
You'll be treated as non-resident from the day after you leave the UK if you can show:
you left the UK to go abroad permanently or your absence and full-time work abroad lasts at least the whole tax year
your visits to the UK are less than 183 days in a tax year and average less than 91 days a tax year over a maximum of four consecutive years

I assume that the OP has paid any tax that is due in Australia.

the OP was not in full time employment abroad for a period where the employment included a complete UK tax year; therefore remains UK resident throughout.
