Finding good freelance work

Options
I am looking to work as a freelancer to try to make a bit of money!
I have looked at Peopleperhour but heard bad things about the competition for jobs and low pay!
I read an article on a website called Lovemoney (one of this sites competitors I think -not half as good as here though!) where they mentioned one called freelance parents network.
Have any of you used it? What is it like? Is it worth signing up?

Thanks for any tips on this and other good sites (I am a freelance PA btw!)

  • You set your own rate of pay and so you cannot complain about what rate you're paid.

The challenge with all these sites (and they are basically all the same) is that they are global and so you do compete against providers who have a much lower cost of living and so willing to work for less money than you are.

You therefore simply cannot compete on price and it is crazy to try to. You thus must give those proposing the projects/ pieces of work a different reason to select you over the $3 an hour person in Mumbai

The other difficulty with these sites is that they are the same as eBay or any other site where feedback is involved is that it is difficult to get initial work because you have no feedback and its difficult to get feedback as no one will trust you. Normally you have to do a few pieces at very low prices to get the initial feedback.

With web development projects, which is what I did, also only about 20% of posted work/ projects were actually awarded to anyone. As you get more experience on them you get better at those that are posting geniuine work and those just throwing ideas out there etc but you can waste a lot of time reading and writing pitches etc which never go anywhere

I have signed up with Freelance Parents Network but unfortunately have yet to have any success from it.

Rosalind who owns FPN is very nice and she will email notification of all jobs on offer to all freelancers, but as yet there has been nothing suitable for me (I am a virtual pa).

However, you never know what is around the corner and as FPN grows there may be more jobs on offer. :D
