Lingering Coffee Smell

Options
I just know somebody mse out there will have the solution to this. I cannot bring myself to throw out those Doue Egberts glass coffee jars and would really love to use them for storage and ideally for stuff like dried apricots etc. The trouble is there is always a coffee smell no matter how much I wash. After I wash them, I leave them with no lid on for a few days. If I replace the lid they smell again so I suspect it might be the plastic seal part of the lid which I cannot get the coffee smell out of. I don't have dishwasher by the way. Do any of you have any ideas regarding the smell. Failing that I would love some suggestion for non food use of the jars. Thanks so much:D

  • Perhaps fill with water and add a bit of bicarb? shake it so the lid also gets cleaned...

    Wash them with Milton.
Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.
  • I'd pour a bit of vinegar in, seal them and then turn them on their heads. Let them "soak" overnight and then wash as normal. Should let the vinegar do its work on the plastic bit and will probably help with any remaining odour in the glass bit.

Gently lever the plastic bit off and wash separately, using one of the above recommendations ;) Bicarb worked for me... :)
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)
  • I find the best way to completely stop the smell is to wash them in a really hot wash in a dishwasher. In fact it's about the only thing that I use our dishwasher for!
