Returning to the UK after living abroad

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this question, but seeing as it focuses on tax, it does seem the best fit.

I am returning to the UK permanently on 3rd October, after living in Holland for 3.5 years, and have been checking what I need to do to get myself settled back in the UK. I will not be working initially - I will be living with my parents, and am taking a few weeks break (not going abroad, just not working) to recover from all of the recent stress and upset, before looking for a new job.

The DirectGov website gives some guidance on what to do tax wise. Firstly, telling me that I need to let HMRC know of my return to the UK. When I searched the HMRC site about this, it told me to call them. So I did. Only, the guy on the phone told me I didn't need to do anything, or fill out any forms. Just ask my new employer for a P46 when I start a new job. So, now I don't know which is correct. The DirectGov information, or the HMRC guy. Does anyone here know?

Also, the DirectGov guidance makes reference to informing the National Insurance Contributions (International Services) office that I have returned. Only, when I search the HMRC website, I cannot find any reference to this office, so I have no idea who to contact. Does anyone have any idea?

I'm a bit stumped and want to ensure that I do everything correctly.
