Thinking of moving into self employment from Incapactiy benefit

Hi, I have been long term sick and so still on incapacity benefit for 6 yrs now following a breakdown, loss of partner through medical negligence..subsequent loss of daughter and several other major problems leaving me severely anxious and depressed and loss of my nursing job.
Some time has passed now and I have developed a love of handicrafts. My local garden centre has a small cabin free where I could sell items if I made them. I am seriously thinking of moving into self employment.
My credit history isnt good and dont think the banks would help me..does any body know whether the government would help me to set up my own business? I am 47 so not a youngster but it would help to get off incapacity benefit and improve mental health. All constructive advice welcomed x

I would have a google of Business Link, I know they can provide advice, not sure if you have to pay or not but it is a Govt organisation.
I'm no expert but I *think* that you are not entitled to ANY benefits if you are self-employed, I would try to find out more (maybe CAB or a benefit checker?) and give it serious consideration. If it doesn't work out as being SE do you want to go through the hassle of trying to claim for everything again after you de-register from self-employment.
Good luck to you whatever you decide
