Keeping coffee warm for 12 hours?

Options
Well, today I spent 6 quid in starbucks. Discraceful, I know, sorry MSEers! :(

Basically I'm back at college which means I leave for work at 7:45-8ish in the morning and get home and 9 at night. I need coffee to keep going between %:30 when I finish work and 6 when I start college, and again on the 10 min break I get at 7:30ish. I have no time at lunch to make it because I only have half an hour and usually have notes to read over, things to read, and sometimes even eat. ;)

Do any of you old-style MSEers have any tips on how to keep a flask of coffee hot from 5:30am to 7:30 at night? Am I just wishing too much? I was thinking of wrapping a flask up in a towel, but doubt it'd work.

Please help!

  • I'd try filling the flask with boiling water to pre-heat it. Then, once it's filled with coffee don't open it until the second half of your day. If this works then you could bring two flasks with you, one for the morning and one for the evening. I'm not sure if these ideas will work but they are worth a try!

Yes that would be my idea too. It's the opening that cools down the liquid do if you can have two separate flasks you might stand half a chance

My workmate used to have one of those picnic 'pump' flasks so the lid never had to come off.
He used it all night at work and never mentioned that the coffee was cold at the end of the shift.

A really good flask is essential plus pre-heating it with boiling water and not opening it till teatime.

You could also think about taking in one of these soft drinks with caffine, like Red Bull or something? I'm totally not a fan of these as everyday soft drinks but they do have a place in life, as do caffine tablets like Pro-plus, the standby of many a student studying for exams! I've done the college after work shifts myself though and know how hard it gets. Other things that help are sensible amounts of food at lunch and dinner, not to much sweet stuff, trying to get ten minutes of fresh air at breaks and enough sleep at night. Easier said than done of course but you'd be amazed how much walking between the last set of bus stops wakes you up, or five minutes outside the college entrance eating a banana and a handfull of nuts or something.

All great ideas but even in flasks some are better than others and when I was taking tea/coffee/soup into Mum in the short time she was in a Nursing Home(and for myself too)the flask that stayed the hottest longest 12 hours minimum and longer than that(even if opened numerous times)was not a Thermos branded one but one branded by and sold by Wilkinsons so it could work.

Thanks for the replies guys. Some advice.

Energy drinks are great, but quite often we have no heating, so hot drinks are a must. I was lookibg at foods to bring in too, you do get very hungry, so thanks for the idea there too.

When I was at college I used to take a Lifeventure Thermal mug with me (sorry, don't think I can post links, but if you google it you'll see the one I mean).

It's got metal on the inside, whereas flasks tend to be glass, and I found that if you pre-heat it it keeps the coffee warm for most of the day.

They are small enough for you to take 2 in, too, I would think, so you could have one for morning and one for later in the day.

When I want to keep coffee long for hours, I use the tips given above, and also cover the top of the flask with cling film before I put the screw on lid on top
  • I've got a Stanley Classic Flask & it really does keep liquids warm for 24hours. I never need it that long but when ive left it in the shed at the allotment its still palatable the next day. Not cheap but worth the cost in my opinion.
