Hello. I hope that maybe somebody can give me some constructive advice on how to handle my case.
I was with my bf for 6 years, recently (3 months ago) we split up as i decided i no longer have feelings for him. during our relationship i lent him altogether around 13000-14000 and got more or less half of it back ( after insisitng on it since i was just about to buy a house and needed the money for deposit). Of course, i trusted him and therefore we never had any written agreement, but it was a bit of on-off relationship and every time after a split up i would lent him money for eg. putting deposit to rent out a flat. The money was never ''given' to him ,and we had few conversations about it(again nothing written). nonethless, he never really took any initiative to pay it back.
However, 3 weeks ago he physically assaulted me -i called police , he got arrested, denied it and we have a hearing in magistrates court in novemeber. Therefore, as far as i am concerned, i am not allowed and neither is he to contact each other.
i would like to get my money back . I understand that small claims court only deals with cases under 5k. Since we were a couple i did not really monitor when and how much money i was lending him (from 2006 onwards). eVen though, he has been earning over 30k , he has been pretty poor with managing money and almost constantly in debt . Some of the money were transferred from my to his account ,some of them were withdrawn from my account ( one of them is already closed) and deposited into his account. some of them were just handed over to him and spent. some were for his parents who live abroad and had some financial difficulties. I imagine it will be a bit difficult to track all of the transactions-although most of them were rather large lump sums eg. £300 and over .
I am now in a diffcult financial position and first time ever in debt -Cannot afford a solicitor and would like to sort it out as quickly as possible.

hate to say this but you stand little chance of getting your money back, especially as you seem to have little proof you gave it him.
Do you have insurance that might give you access to solicitors advice? (sometimes house insurance has this or through work like a union). Also some solicitors give a certain amount of free advice, about 30 minutes.
If you can find any proof that you loaned him money you could always try the small claims, cost is approx £30Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0 -
Hi visteria, sorry to hear what's happened. I was in a similar position with my ex in that he bled me dry- as tallyhoh says, unless you have proof it was a loan the SCC will throw out your case. Some solicitors do a drop in session where you can get an hour of their time for free, I Googled free legal advice clinic in my area, hope that starts you off. Good luck!0
