Finally got a job!

After 13 months of unemployment, I have finally been offered a job, full-time hours, working in dementia care in a home a mere 10 minute walk from my house! I am so relieved! I'm also now starting to get stressed out about money. I've been on JSA since August 2011, and have just been put onto the Work Programme. I cannot start shifts at the care home until my CRB check comes back, and then it's obviously going to be the end of October before I get paid.
I'm really really worried that I won't be able to survive till the end of October - what exactly will happen when I tell the job centre? Will they stop my money straight away, or do I get a 4 week run-on, the way I would with council tax/housing benefit?
Can anyone offer any advice, because I'm stressed out already, and I haven't even started!

I dont think you will get a four week run on, although could be wrong. That would mean you would be getting JSA and earning wages.
However there might be some crisis fund etc? So worth asking your advisor
Have you worked out the last day you will get JSA after your last signing on, there might be something there to tide you over a little?0 -
I am due to sign on next on Monday 1st October. I am very much hoping by that time my CRB check will have come back (I volunteer with a charity, so I've only recently had one done). Say I started on the 1st, would I still get that week's lot of JSA then?0

By law you have to sign off the day BEFORE you start work, so that will be your final payment of JSA (I do belive they also give you a £100 back to work grant), you could try applying for a budget loan before you sign off, that's what i'm going to do to help tide my over.CheshireKitten wrote: »I am due to sign on next on Monday 1st October. Having a CRB done before will not speed it up, they'll do the checks regardless, and no you will only get JSA up to the day before you start working0 -
Inform the job centre just a day or two before you official start your job. You'll be doing yourself no favours by telling them early.0

When the CRB check has come back no doubt you will get a start date. Then you go to the JC and sign off and tell them you want the job grant too.
Also, if you have been sent to the work programme and started it by this time I am sure they can help you out too.0 -

I wouldn't say 'no doubt'. It depends whether the offer was made by the company or through an agency. I was once offered a job through an agency and their CRB check took a while. Then I got told, after chasing it up, that I apparently forgot to sign something which they never mentioned. So I signed it, waited several more weeks, and they ended up telling me the job's gone as the employer offered the job to whoever's CRB check went through clean first. I suspect there was no such job to begin with lol.0
