Coping with annoying colleagues

    I had one of these sit next to me once...so I built a 3ft tall wall of coke cans on my desk, so I didn't have to look at their stupid face. Not exactly subtle, but did the trick.

    I know it's not an option for everyone, but if it gets too much, I put my headphones on and play music, my phone has a little light so I can see when it is ringing, that way you only get disturbed if some-one has something really important to say.
    I am quite direct with people, the annoying person in our office, has an opinion on everything and recently butted in when I was advising one of my staff on a difficult situation with a client, she had to walk round a desk to listen in. I simply said, "Do you mind, we are having a conversation here and I am not aware I asked your opinion" then we both stopped talking while she slunk back to her desk. Be direct but matter of fact, not cheeky or rude or sneery.
  • get to know her - have a cup of coffee with her and maybe another work-mate. Ask her what she thinks about a piece of work etc. She might be shy or lack confidence but can't deal with it very well.

    Sometimes situations like this can snowball and it just needs someone to break the cycle. If it fails then you're lumbered, sorry.

    Good advice. People who learn to work with people productively, even wit those they don't get on with, are far more of an asset to a company than those who have personality clashes and arguments
