Old savings account - can I still get the money?

I've been given two passbooks in the past couple of weeks by my half sister that were set up by my biological dad when I was born. One is for TSB and the other is a national savings account (the post office I assume?)

I went into TSB yesterday with all my ID (I had to take everything I had - I took my stepdads name and then got married last year so its all a bit of a mess!)
The last record on the passbook is dated 1989 - the bank manager told me that the account had been closed and that no money was in there.

Now, I took this at face value thinking that my biological dad withdrew all the money in that account, thanked him and left. After talking to my half sister, she said that her dad (my bio dad, but Im not in contact with him) and her mum tried to retrieve the money some years ago only to be told by the bank that it can only be retrieved by me. So, there should be money in there.

Is it just the case that the account has been closed as its over 10 years old but I can still get the money back somehow? Im thinking now perhaps I got a lazy branch manager who couldnt be bothered to look into it properly/ didnt know how to deal with my request.

I'll be going to the post office on saturday with the other passbook hoping for a better response! Any ideas??
