Sick pay entitlement?

My daughter works for Sainsbury P/T after college. 13 hours P/W over 2 days/ 6 hour day and 7 hour day.
Last month she was in hospital for 2 shifts (13 hours). They have docked her 13 hours off her pay. Is that fair?

What is in your daughters contract regarding sickness pay? Did she complete a self certification to cover her sickness? Did she let her employer know she wouldn't be in? How long has she worked there? All of these answers effect sickness pay. If in doubt get her to ask her line manager.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

I believe that if she's not entitled to full sick pay from the company (details regarding sick pay procedure will be in her contract), then she would be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) but this is only paid after 3 days off sick. She was only off 2 days so was not entitled to any pay for that period, though if she had been off 4 days she would have got SSP.

The whole sick pay procedures and rules will be in her paperwork.

Also if she is not entitled to compnay sick pay then she may not qualify for SSP as per her NI contributions for this to be paid through her employer.

It will depend on her hourly rate.

  • As has already been said, your daughter will need to look through her contract. I doubt if she would qualify for SSP, there is a Lower Earnings Limit which was £84 per week. If she is earning less than this a week then she wouldnt receive SSP.

Seems a bit unfair. It was 2 days, but over a week in actual time as it was a wed and sat. I will get her to check the contract
