  • Thanks Sandstone and Whitewing! Whitewing, I love the thought of having an overpayment simply by keeping payments the same when rates drop - I'm intending to do exactly that when we change to our new mortgage in January. Children definitely get in the way of financial action plans, but my youngest is nearly 2, and I need a new challenge to take my mind off it being the end of the baby days for me!

The Chelsea buns were a big hit - devoured very quickly. I'll definitely be making them again. Not quite such a productive evening as I'd hoped as very tired, and DS3 up coughing again already :( Hope we get a quiet night - good night all.

  • Another day of hideous weather here. No exciting moneysaving news to report, although I have just checked my bank account and found that we have received a refund into our bank account of our most recent premium for the decreasing term assurance policy on our mortgage, which I had lowered to take into account our reduced mortgage balance. I didn't ask them to cancel it altogether, so not quite sure why they have refunded my premium... oh well, I'll have to phone and ask tomorrow.

I always look forward to the last couple of days of the month as I can reconcile the bank accounts, do invoicing for OH's business and work out whether we have been on target for the month! (not everyone's idea of fun, but I'm sure others on this forum will understand!) I think we will just about hit our overpayment target for September, and I have managed to pay some of my storecard bill as well which is nice. Even though it is interest free, I hate having credit card debt - but it makes sense to spread the payment over six months so I really shouldn't worry about it, and our old chairs were in dire need of replacement - they were a combination of mismatched ancient chairs "donated" by relatives!

A couple of booking enquiries today for our rental property - it's a holiday let so we take short term bookings, often fairly last minute. I have no idea what the autumn and winter will hold in the way of bookings, given the atrocious weather that we have had in recent months - so it is encouraging that people are enquiring about autumn and winter holidays. We have taken many bookings over the rest of the year, despite the weather, so any off-season bookings are a bonus.

Well an evening of work is calling so I must get on. Hope everyone has a cosy evening without too much rain!

I know how you feel about the weather, not sure if you heard about the block of flats at Newburn in danger of collapsing with the torrential rain we have had the last couple of days, well I live about 5 miles away from there and I can tell you I am sick of the rain, there are puddles on top of the puddles at the moment, and with it being near farm land there is nowhere for the water to run off to apart from the roads, I am hoping it dries out a bit soon. Luckily I live at the top of a very large hill so no flood damage by my house thank god!

  • That sounds awful Heffi1 - we are also near the top of a hill so am not too worried, but the ditch which runs alongside our house has turned into a torrent this afternoon. At the moment it is flowing onto the main road, causing hold ups while vehicles try to pass, so I am hoping there is no more rain and it does not decide to divert its course into our garden!

We are deep in rural Northumberland and while the scenery is beautiful, the council have not done much about keeping the drains in good repair, Rothbury and Morpeth have been really hit hard and were completely closed off yesterday with the rivers bursting their banks again. It is dry for now so that is a bonus

  • Thanks Firesidemaid! To go below £50k is a fantastic achievement - well done! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that October might be the month we go below £400k, but haven't quite got up to speed with my spreadsheet tracking so we shall see...
