What does 6 kg of washing look like?

We have had to buy a washing machine in hurry. They never seem to last long in this house ( about 3 years) I am sure like a lot of people over load the machine so what would 6 kg of washing comprise of? Do the manufacturers count it as dry or wet when describing the load capacity?

I usually just 2/3 fill my machine rather than a certain number of items.

You know those round washing baskets that you can buy:-

    http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-value-laundry-basket-white/215-7797.prd;jsessionid=B4899F7565E308D235C842FF730B0805.UKTUL10LF67V_slot2?skuId=215-7797&pageLevel=

well that is roughly enough to fill a machine drum with enough to spare for room to move.

I got mine form Tesco's a few years back when they were selling them for £1.49 - it was a bargain. That is dry weight and I have had my washing machine for 12 years now!!

6kg of towels or jeans look a lot different to 6kg of nylon gauze curtains, put it that way. But for the average family mix of clothes the best way is just to fill the drum 2/3rds full of loosely packed items. The manufacturers recommendation is for dry weight btw.

I've had my German made Bosch for twelve years now btw, 10 loads a week including gardening clothes and rugby kit. It has something the booklet describes as "fuzzy logic" which adjusts to the weight of the load. It's 12 years old now. Go for the best machine you can afford and yes, don't overload it. A decent machine should last longer than three years of normal use, unless you've got 12 kids or a B&B or need to wash lots of bedding.

6kg is typically a small capacity machine.

Different manufacturers seem to 'define' capacities differently however.

Our current '8kg' Panasonic washer handles bigger loads than our previous '8kg' Hotpoint one.

6kg is the capacity of a 6kg machine for a load of COTTON clothing items. Bedding capacity is probably 3kg and woollens 2kg.

Thumbs up test. Loosely fill the machine & there should still be room to do a thumbs up on top of the washing & below the top of the drum.

:) A washing-machine mechanic told me how to load; loosely until drum is half-full, emphasis on loosely-piled not rammed down. Any more than that and you'll strain the machine and get a less-clean wash, to boot. HTH.:)

  • Our local Currys have a display in their washing machine section which I thought was really helpful, it's different piles of laundry sorted into 5kg, 6kg etc etc. It's all nice in transparent plastic cubes, not a load of dirty grundies chucked on the floor.

I love the thumbs up tip though, I'm going to be like Jeanette Krankie next time I do a load (which should be after I've posted this, but more than likely won't be......)

  • Thanks for all the advice I'll see if 2/3 and the thumbs up rule is similar. Why don't machines have the features you want together? The load is either too small or the rpm is too low or the wash cycles last 3 hours!!!! lol. We'll see how long this machine lasts??!!!

Yep but most of us don't have as many bodies in the house (live bodies, not dead ones in case anyone is wondering lol) as you and your brood do!!
