I stand corrected and learned something new, i always thought both parts where taken into account if the NRP was the higher earner....
So WTC would be relevant as you need to work to get them...
It is swings and roundabouts though, there are 1000's claiming as single parents when there are 2 living there, they pay more but get more...
I don't agree with any of the system in the UK it all needs dragging to the bin and starting again...
As i have said before, you should not be eligible to claim anything if you have equity including a car over a certain value, and that value should be a total of savings bank account car and property...!!! It makes me sick that so many people get away with beating the system...!!!
My nan worked hard all her life, saved every penny, went without, never had holidays etc etc and now she is in a care home paying for herself... £215,000 so far, yet the same care is offered to someone who has sat on benefits all there life, and doesn't have a penny in savings, but had 3 holidays a year, new car every year and lived in cheap council property... You get my point...!!!
Kevin, people fall on hard times through no fault of their own - today a large salary and everything that goes with it, tomorrow redunancy and within a couple of months, potentially struggling to pay basic bills. They could still have £thousands in equity but how do you expect them to turn that into cash overnight? Even selling a car isn't that easy...people shouldn't be forced into selling for next to nothing or lose their home as a result of circumstances beyond their control. Chances are, within a relatively short time, they'll be back on their feet..no car? how do they get back to work? No house means potentially greater demand on social housing. And then the unquantifiable stuff - the upheavel of house moving and the impact that has on children in particular (exams? moving schools?).....
I am not against the idea of capping benefits or of paying them for a limited period but the idea of forcing people to liquidate assets would surely mean no one would ever bother to save or work hard in the first place since there would always be the very real possibility of losing it all overnight?0 -
What is the current CAP for benefits with savings, something stupid like £8,000...? If you took that cap away, and said £15,000 but you don't get anything until then... It would reduce the benefit bill substantially...! I am not for one minute saying that homes on mortgages should be assessed in that to start. But why oh why should you sit on £50 £100 or even £200,000+ in equity and claim poverty...??? They don't allow our old who have worked all there lives to do that for there care, so why should someone who has only worked 1 year or 10 years....!!!0

Oh, come on! This is going a bit too far now, not only does everyone on benefits live in a mansion with a 50" flat screen TV, but now they all have 3 holidays and a new car every year!
I don't know of any long term benefits claimants who have ever had a new car, let alone a new one every year.0 -

The system sucks, And nothing is going to change it will just get worse, and your tax will go up as a result, and people will continue to abuse the system and it will break.... Oh hang on, it already has broken, that is why the councils are selling of school playing fields, there are no youth clubs, roads don't get repaired, and charging so much more for council tax, and only collecting rubbish once a fortnight and so on and so on...0
