Temping assignment got terminated without any valid reason!

  • It is likely that you are employed by the Agency. If so, your contract is with them and you need to check it. Many Agencies will state in the contract that an assignment can end at any time with no reason given. So... check your contract.

Contacting the client would be out of order. They have no obligation to you whatsoever. They have a contract with the Agency, not with you. It is likely their contract with the Agency entitles them to end the assignment at any time for no reason. And they have done. This is the benefit to them of using temps.

If you are employed by the Agency, then you are still employed by the Agency. Give them a call in the morning and ask what else is available. This is the lot of a temp - put a smile on your face and get back in there for your next assignment. Maybe ask if there's anything you can learn from the last assignment, but I wouldn't go any further. Other than what you can learn from it, it's irrelevant why they dismissed you. Next assignment please!

Too true, agencies want it both ways, usually in their contract they want you to give 1 weeks notice on leaving an assignment yet they can get rid of you with no notice at 1 minute to 5.00PM on a Friday. One reason in my opinion why recruitment agencies suck:eek:

It may not be their most redeeming feature. However, in the current climate where companies are not recruiting as many permanent vacancies, Agencies give those companies a temporary option. And therefore, give temp candidates work and pay. Plus the flexibility can work both ways - a temp can take what assignments they want and can work for a couple of weeks, then take several off and then work some more etc... It can and does work well for a lot of people, and has worked well for me in the past. But no, it's not everone's cup of tea.

Like a lot of others have said it is a temp contract so they don't need a reason at all. You can ask for feedback but they might just say "we don't need her anymore" and they don't have to reveal if there is someone else in the role now either.
  • I guess it depends on what you hope to get out of the contact with the former line manager?

Agencies are very sensitive about you cutting them out of the loop and you could quickly find yourself blacklisted with them if you do make contact.

The agency may or may not know the reason for the termination and they are under no obligation to tell you any more than their client is for telling them the reason. You would argue it is best practice to be honest with all parties but sometimes it isnt and sometimes people want an easy life rather than arguments.

Even if you do contact the manager directly there no guarantees that they will be willing or allowed to tell you either. If it were due to a "negative" reason then in the modern day world of suing everyone just for breathing they would more than likely just give a generic "no longer required" type reply.

That's the nature of temping. You're on an hour's notice. I wouldn't even have thought it odd really; companies decide at the drop of a hat that they need a temp - and cancel them just as quickly. I'd certainly not think it was something I'd done, or something I needed to find out the "why?" about.

All in a day's work (or not) for temps.

Don't contact the client directly. Almost certainly they won't like it.

One way or another they had a reason to get rid of you (varying from they didn't like you to the work wasn't there to continue employing you) - in which case they would expect the agency to deal with it and have no more contact from you.
If the agency didn't pass along the reason adequately, the client would be unlikely to think that was their issue to explain it in any detail.

If you contact the client directly and they don't like it, they will let the agency know they don't like it, then the agency will not be very happy with you.

    Hi Folks

Just to give you kind people an update on this -

I spoke to the agency today & they said I was brought in to cover work for someone off long term sick. Now that someone is back, so therefore they don't need me any more !

Please don't take this the wrong way, but wouldn't you have been aware of this reason when you took on the temporary assignment?
