Working two part-time jobs - tax question

I have an interview this Thursday, for part-time temporary work possible 12 week contract up to Christmas (6 hour shifts between 8am and 10pm) I also have a 2nd interview next week for another part-time job working Wednesdays & Thursdays, but this would be permanent.

If I was fortunate enough to get both offers how does it work with regard P45 and tax/NI payments? I obviously give my P45 to the permanent employer, then do I just give my NI number to the temporary employer? Or are there other forms I will need to complete?

Any advice much appreciated.

Fabulous, sounds very straight forward. Appreciate your help.
  • Would your Personal Allowance be used up at the 'permanent' job?

The 'permanent' job would be just under £10k pa. Does this mean that the majority of the money earned on the temporary 12 week contract would be taken in tax?
  • As the permanent job would use up your personal allowance, you would pay 20% income tax on the other job. You give the P45 to the permanent job and complete a P46 for the other one. In the P46 you should tick the box saying you have another job and they will give you a tax code of BR (Basic Rate).

PlutoinCapricorn, thank you for the clarification - I'm jumping the gun, but like to be prepared.......
  • It is essential to understand how income tax works and to check that your codes are correct and that you are paying the right amount no matter how many jobs you have.

Other people posting here underpaid tax on two part time jobs as they were getting two personal allowances, and some people overpaid tax as they were not getting one PA! Some people need to split their PA between two part time jobs as neither pays enough to cover it.

I hope that you get both of the jobs.

Thanks for all the advice, sadly I didn't get the permanent position, but I did get the temporary contract - so happily start on 1 October for 12 weeks.
  • I am sorry about the permanent job, but glad to hear that you got the other one. Perhaps you can get Working Tax Credit ...
