Need help with where i stand...

I'll cut a long story short as best i can.
I had a Natwest account, and i stopped using about 6 years ago and moved to Barclays. (NatWest were C**p!)
In July i had a letter from Natwest saying they were 'transferring my account to CapQuest' as they had sold my account. Cue letter from capquest asking for £415 for debt owed on NatWest account.
Now i had NO IDEA what this money was supposed to be owed for as i'd never had an overdraft on my account, and stopped uisng this account in 2007. After lots of letters requesting breakdown of the charges on the account, i finally got a copy of my statement and it seems a DD had gone out from Ebay after i'd stopped using the account (for £8), and NatWest charged £28 per month in fees on this for over 12months. They said they sent numerous letters to me, but the first i'd heard was when i had the letter this year.
Now, i know it was silly of my not to close the account (i was 19 at the time and didn't really think), but will i have to pay back the money owing on this account?
Furthermore if this is the case then will these charges not be classed as 'unfair bank charges' which everyone seems to be claiming back anyway?
I have the financial ombudman investigating my complaint, but i honestly don't know what to expect, so any past experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

The unfair bank charge case was lost when the banks won it a few years back so very very few people are reclaiming them.0
