In the absence of a p45 did you fill in a P46 when you started work.

What is the tax code on your last payslip

Well, you are on the correct tax code. Any tax issue would have been sorted out on your first or second payslip with the company. ( or subsequent ones if you are weekly paid of course)

    Have a look at them.

Just a tip, keep all payslips in a file, you never know when you will neeed them.

    Good luck

Just checking - on any of your payslips is there a minus sign agains the tax paid.
You may have got a refund (the £158 sounds a lot)

Yes - but it appears that the op is on a month 1 code and the possibility remains that he/she may not have utilised all of April's personal allowance. Obviously the JSA will offset this a little but. as you say, worth keeping all payslips and Jsa details until the end of the tax year before reviewing.

I only ask about the minus sign because a few months ago someone had missed it and thought they had paid the amount of tax but it ended up it was a refund, they are easily missed.

Completely agree - I had just noticed that the op stated that there was an 'x' after his code number which suggested, to me, that he was on 810L on a week1/month1 basis

The original poster has unfortunately confused the issue.

In their original post they signed off with a "x"

In their second post they signed off with an "x" however it could mean that the x is a non cumulative code.

If its because it a non cumulative code, then they might have overpaid tax,

however if its a sign off then they might be under paying tax, because they started in May, and have not had a P45 from the DWP so any JSA received in this year will not be taken into account if the current employer is using their full allowance for the year.
