Ear candling

Anyone tried Hopi ear candling?
Thinking of giving it a go.

  • Urgh. Have a look at this article especially the last reader comment at the end. Hot wax dripped on ear drum, hearing loss, pain, infection - no thanks!

My Step son thought these were brill a few years back

    Good laugh

But do they do anything? Nope
  • nope, they are a massive load of rubbish. The only reason you get stuff that looks like earwax inside the candle is...wait for it...the candlewax itself looks like earwax.

    Bunkum.

After suffering with horrendous vertigo a couple of times, I'd avoid it like the plague! Not something I'd wish on my worst enemy (well, maybe a few ;))

  • I tried it and for me it worked. Had ear infection/pain/loss of hearing and after 6 weeks of prescription drugs/products I decided I had nothing to lose by giving it a try. The relief was immediate. Had one follow up treatment after that.
Fast forward a few years and I have developed Tinnitus in one ear so decided to try Hoppi ear candling again, on this condition it didn't work for me.
I am not a touchy/feely person but found the treatment incredibly relaxing(face massage included in the treatment) just make sure a competent person carries it out(the person I used instructs students on how to do it)

    Do not try it.

Quackery of the worst order. Potentially very dangerous.

There will be no such thing as a 'competent' person doing it, because anyone with any degree of respect for their patients/clients will have researched what they are doing to people - and if you research this you find out that it's complete hokum.

Therefore, anyone doing it is either aware that they're a fraud, or don't bother to find out whether what they are doing to people is safe & effective. Either way, it would not be someone I'd want working on me or those close to me.

    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

There are plenty of safer ways to loosen wax such as softening drops. I also noticed when I was using wax ear plugs regularly that the wax was easy to remove right after, presumably because the ear plug effectively traps body heat.
