Tax rebate

My husband has just had a tax rebate letter. It shows a refund is due for a very nice amount but from the tax years 2006/07. Surely this cannot be right that it has taken them all this time to realise it? it refers to some medical cover he had with a firm he worked for years ago, well, in fact, 2006. They would have known he wasnt working for them as he was made redundant and then claimed JSA
any thoughts on this very long delay in getting a refund we didnt know we had!
thanks:eek:

Presumably the letter contained full details of income and tax deducted. We really would need these before being in any position to further advise.

    It could well be right.

The normal time limit for claiming a refund is 4 years. But I understand HMRC has been running a one off program to clear millionss of legacy cases that predate its new PAYE computer system (2005 - 2008). The program has been running a few years and is due to finish soon. These cases date back to a period when end of year tax checks were largely carried out manually - which is why its taken longer to identify all the refunds.

Oh and the repayment will include interest.
