Santander (through Comet) Buy Now Pay Later agreement

We have an agreement that ends on 19 September. If we pay up to that date we incur a £25 early payment fee.

I've just called to ask if I ring and pay on 20 September will I just incur a day's interest which is obv. cheaper than the £25 (24.9% apr). The foreign guy on the other end of the phone just says 'exactly'.

I don't trust them at all - has anyone been in the same boat? Would I be better just swallowing the £25 and saving myself some hassle?

I wouldn't trust either Comet or Santander.

All I can see on their website blurb is *subject to terms and conditions" though those terms and conditions don't seem to be available online. It is probably a case, therefore, of reading very carefully the small print on your paperwork to see how they charge for early settlement. Possibly, they charge one or even two months interest.

If you have the money I would go for the £25 penalty and pay it now although it may be already to late to be processed by their system by the due date.
  • That's what I decided to do and have done. Galling though. Won't touch either with a bargepole in the future.
  • Bought an iPad and freezer on 12 months buy now pay later from Comet. Total outstanding was £485.09. Guy in the shop said best way is to pay £485.08 leaving 1p outstanding. This way you won't pay £25 early settlement fee and you will only pay interest on the 1p. Load of codswallop according to Santander. Yes you won't incur the early repayment fee but you will incur interest for the full amount (£485.09). Lesson learnt, never again.

I have a 'buy it now, pay later' agreement with Comet (Sandander) but I can't find any info on payments? I have 6mths to pay for it so would like to get it out of the way. Does anyone have a number I can ring to find out this information?
    Thanks Ozzy.
  • We purchsed a TV from Comet in the summer -on the pay in full before the end of 6mnths -or we would go on a 24% interest loan with Santander.
We have since moved house and loat the contract - and obviously Comet have gone bust -all i know is that I have to pay it before a particular date this month(Jan) or pay a ridiculous interest rate.
I have tried calling various number for Santander - and they claim they cannot help - and all the comet numbers I try are just a voicemail explaining they are in administration and to call Santander (0113 3346091) -who claim they cant help. We havent had any letters or info since the day we brought the TV home.

Does anyone have any clues on how to deal with this? Or useful telephone numbers?

Santander are horrendous to deal with and will pass you from pillar to post at call centres all over the country.

Send an email to twitter@santander.co.uk detailing your problem and see if they can point you in the right direction. This worked for me after many stressful hours wasted on the 'phone recently.

Do it immediately as you will probably find that unless the money is cleared before the due date then interest will be charged from the date of purchase.

Come back and let us know how you get on.

Comet will have done that the moment you signed the agreement (and probably been paid for it as well).

  • I was wondering if anyone could help. I bought an iPad on the buy now pay in 9 months scheme with comet last year and it is due to be paid/start paying as of the 1st April. I have since lost the paperwork we were sent through and just need to get in contact with Santander, who provide the credit, to find out the balance and how I go about paying it off. I have a reference number from the direct debit on my account which is inactive but I don't know who to call? Also we took out the insurance on the iPad for 2 years with comet which cost £100+ I am not too happy about having to pay for this if now the insurance is null and void due to the company going into administration, does anyone know if I will be covered still or if not will I be able to not pay for the service which I now won't be receiving.

I wouldnt have thought the insurance wouldnt be null an void at all and nothing to do with comet since its provided by an outside company, who that company is I dont know but would have thought the name would be on any paperwork you have relating to the insurance part.

Maybe have a loo on the internet as to who provided the insurance or ask on other forums related to technology eg av forums is about tvs etc so you might be lucky and find posters on there can provide a number.
