it is a tad harsh.
At the moment their non-mortgage debt is around about as much as they earn per year after tax etc.
They could recover from that with luck and determination. If is gets any higher, then they need to talk to a debt charity and things will eb a lot harder.
By the way OP - do you have a spare room? If so, lodgers are tax free up to £370 per month. And that has to include anything you include in the bill like CT.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
