What a horrible experience! I don't have any tips, we only have a gas fire, but have a Wolfy (((HUG))).

Look at it this way; maybe someone thinking of skipping having the chimney swept will read this thread and think again.... Cold comfort, I know, but it might save someone else from a similar experience.

how often should you get the chimney swept?

Should be annually. Never burn unseasoned wood either as this makes it worse and more prone to fires.

Someone else said to use dry cloths and vacuum and I totally agree with this - using water at this stage will just smear it all around and make it harder to remove.

Hugs and sympathy from me too - must have been frightening.

(ps - mine is due to be done and I was going to eek it out a bit longer as I don't have the money to do it atm - I will FIND the money having read this post x)

Ahh sympathies, we didn't have the fire but a few weeks ago the soot whooshed down about 3 times, just after I'd cleaned up after each event.

I've so far been unable to get hold of the chimney cleaner I've been ringing, he must be super busy. Managed to get rid of the worst, found using baby wipes very helpful to clear the worst of it.

The smell has mainly gone but my sofa is pretty much ruined, rug wrecked and needs a good clean and so does the carpet, if its salvageable.

I had to replace our last carpets because of a huge soot fall as well.:o

  • thanks all.

It's not too bad now - am hoovering every hour (let it settle, hoover, let it settle etc etc), but I really need to get rid of the smell!!

    lesson learnt, I suppose.
