Runners & hill walkers - let's talk chafing.

Have any of you got a way to control this as it's bloody irritating.

I hit the gym & due to my knee problems i don't run, but i do do a bit of speed walking on a fair incline for about 45 minutes, so naturally i get a bit of a sweat on.

I wear either 3/4 tracksuit pants or just shorts & the chafing on my inner thighs is murder. I was there this morning & it doesn't half sting right now.

So when you put a couple of these days together it just keeps getting worse.

  • Roll on deodorant! A decent coverage, allowed to dry, will keep you chafe-free for a decent workout! Don't apply if the skin's already damaged, or it'll sting.

Lanacane sell anti-chafing gel. Never tried it but it might help?

Didn't know such a gel existed. I'll have to look into it. I suspect it'll be pricey though so i may opt for the roll on approach.

It interferes with my workout though. I can fire off a day, maybe 2 in a row, but when i start getting to 3 in a row it begins to hurt during the normal day after that.

Lanacane is wonderful stuff. I had a problem with chafing when I first went on holiday to Turkey. Now I use it everytime I go and have had no futher problems.

I get a similar problem with my knicker elastic/lace when i get hot - its bloody painful and once its started theres really very little you can do... i find just using any kind of moisturiser over the sore areas helps a bit, and lanacaine is good too - will try the roll on deodorant thing too though - that sounds fab !!

I use Bodyglide for running. You can buy it online or in specialist running shops, its pretty expensive but because I do long runs I apply loads of it (all around sports bra, waistband, thighs, all seams of my top) and each pack still lasts about a year / 1,000 miles ish. I haven't had any problems with chafing since

You won't need much to cover an area, it's a silicone gel which makes the area slippery so the skin glides over instead of rubbing. It's the same thing as you get in a lot of expensive makeup primers! I haven't used it myself but I used to work in a pharmacy and it was a reasonably popular product.

What fabric is your clothing? Choose technical fabrics that are sweat wicking - no or very low cotton content - sort of silky and shiny feeling. Agree silicone gel is great stuff.
