I have come across an old thread about a person loosing a portion of housing benefit due to a child going to university and no longer living at home.
That person went to appeal and won the case because the child was at university and had not left home, does anybody know if that ruling has been overturned or does that ruling still stand?

There is no deduction from HB/CTB made for a non dependant if that non dependant is a full time student.
See here:

I am guessing this is more related to the number of bedrooms, where the claim may be changed from 3 bedroom rate to 2 bedroom rate when person leaves for uni. I do remember the thread0

If that's the case then the local authority websites are all saying the same thing.
You cannot have a bedroom allocated for a student at university unless their absence is temporary - less than 52 weeks.
Since most students seem to come back to unload their bags of dirty washing and save money by cadging off the bank of mum and dad fairly frequently then I wouldn't see this as a problem!0 -
I believe this is the case that you are referring to:

Since most authorities seem to take their wording from this case then I would come to the conclusion that this still stands.
Interesting that whether the question is about losing housing benefit or bedroom allocation the answer would be the same because the case really addresses the issue of the student's main residence whilst at uni.0 -
no, this is the case i was referring to:
