How concerned should I be regarding CRB checks?

  • If your conviction is "unspent" i believe that you are supposed to declare it in any application. Employers may also specify they wish to know on an application. That said unless they were carrying out a check they would have no way of knowing, although shuld they find out then they may well dismiss you.

My understanding is that all convictions and cautions show up on CRB checks, irrespective of whether the offence is spent. Some organisations may do a basic disclosure however which i think only shows those convictions that are unspent.

Generally speaking checks will be in place if you are working with vulnerable adults or children, or if the position is in financial services. I think some temp agencies also do checks for simplicity but could be wrong. To the best of my knowledge the majority of roles still do not carry a CRB check, and for those that do companies are often prepared to discuss specifics and to employ those with a record depending on the nature of the case and when it happened.

I work for a very large organisation and the majority of our roles would not need a check. Where we do carry out a check a record does not necessarily mean you are excluded from employment
  • Well, arrest and charge should count for nothing anyway, because nothing is 'proven'. What really matters is whether anyone could get employment despite conviction.

Mmm, not sure how accurate in fact this advice is. It will still appear on CRB, and it depends on the field of employment and reason for CRB check.........
  • I've only ever had to undertake one check in my working history.

    You should be fine.
