Reclaiming Overpaid Student Loan Payment from HMRC Self Assessment

Hope this is the right place for this thread..

I had a student loan and, as an employee and as a self employed person concurrently, I have repaid the loan via PAYE each month and self assessment annually. I fully repaid the loan 1 month into the new tax year.

SLC stopped the PAYE contributions coming out, but instead of refunding me the c£200 they owe me, they sent back some of my self assessment repayment for the previous year (2010/11), back to HMRC, rather than to me.

HMRC would now owe me this money. I have not filled in my return for 2011/12. If I do, should I put that I was liable for student loan payments for that year? Technically I was, but I'm now overpaid, and if I put that I can just see HMRC sending SLC another 9% of my hard earned cash that I'll have a fight to get back.

Also, how do I get back what SLC have sent to HMRC?

I think SLC are a disgrace to be honest. They're so slow to reply, explain things very badly, and slow to refund money overpaid. I had already overpaid the money, why couldn't they just have sent me the refund rather than pushing it back to HMRC for me to somehow claim back?! What gives them the right to play pass the parcel with MY money?! If any truly commercial loans company acted in this way, FSA would shut them down.:mad:
