son late to work money to be docked!

My son aged 18 turned up late for work saturday by half hour.
Had letter yesterday saying that if late again will be docked a hours pay for every minute late???/
The letter was badly written and doent make much sense.
Its a problem that son works for dh brothers and sister so cant talk it though with family
I cant find any thing about what they can take from a wage for lateness on the goverment web site or on this site.
thank you

If he is late it is common practise to round up to the next 15 minuite mark and pay from that time; arrive 8.25 and be paid from 8.30 for example.

I would have Dh speak with his brother!

Sounds unreasonable to deduct a full hour for every minute late. Fair enough he was late if he repeatedly late surely is only reasonable to have deduct the time he was late or make up the shortfall by working late to cover the time he lost.

So if he's 10 minutes late, he might as well not turn up at all because he's not going to get paid for the day!

But anyway, your son should learn to turn up on time and learn some responsibility. It might just be an idle threat?

You can't come out with a comment like that, not knowing the reason why he was late. Sometimes it's beyond their control, ie stuck in traffic due to an accident.

Yeah, he could be taking the michael, but there could also be a reasonable explanation..

If he is late for work how is it "unlawful deduction of wages"?

If he is due to be at work by 8.30am then that is the time he starts, not half an hour or an hour later.

Kids nowadays haven't got any sense of time or priority.

    Why encourage them further?

He needs telling to turn up for work on time, otherwise he will find himself out of a job!

It will have been a comment made to MAKE him turn up on time.

Get him told that he needs to be on time for work - he needs to learn that much.

It sounds like he was taking liberties because it is your DH brothers who employ him.

Perhaps you should tell him that this behaviour is not acceptable whether or not the employer is a relative of the family.
