Retirement Age - Long Term Sick

I have a written contract with my employer that states my retirement age as 60, I am current 57, the contract was signed over 10 years ago. I am aware that the retirement age is being phased out and I wanted to know my situation with respect to this.

There is a twist to the story. I am on long term sick, and have been for the last 12 years, so I am paid by a Private Medical Insurance policy operated by my employer.

What would my specific situation be with respect to retirement at 60?

Regards

Robert

  • I think you will have to read the specific policy terms for your schemes - both for the insurance and company pension.

  • Thank you for the reply. I have taken a look at the Pension Plan Members Booklet and can only find these two references to retirement date:

    · Normal Retirement Date is your 60th birthday

    · If, with the Company’s consent, you remain in service after your Normal Retirement Date, payment of your pension can be postponed until you actually retire. In addition, contributions may be continued towards your retirement fund.

I suspect that the company might be reluctant to provide me with the details of the Private Medical Insurance Scheme.

Any other comments as to where I stand?

    Regards

  • I just wondered if anyone else could 'chime' in on this.

The only significant piece of additional information is that the company has said I have to retire at 60.

    Thanks

What do you want to happen? Carry on being paid from the company's medical insurance policy ad infinitum?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I would have thought the Insurance would only pay out until the company's normal retirement age, ie until you are 60 as per your contract, even though state retirement age is higher.
