Crochet For Left Handed Beginners! Help please!

Hi,

Not sure if this is old style - apologies if not.

I'm wanting a hobby...mainly something to stop me spending and also eating on an evening and someone suggested crochet. I like the look of some things I've seen and fancy making hats and scarves or similar but the problem is I don't know where to start!

I've googled but a lot of info is for right handers and also I'm a bit bombarded so I wondered if anyone out there could recommend a site or book that I can pick the basics up first.

Thanks in advance!

  • Not sure if this will help but my DD1 is left handed and i've taught her to crochet right-handed. She'd never picked up a hook before so it didn't make any difference to her, yes it took longer maybe but now she's away with it.

Other than that have you searched youtube for left-handed tutorials? I learnt (right-handed) through youtube and it was fab, much easier than trying to follow a book imo.

My DD is very dominantly left handed but I still taught her to knit and crochet right handed. It all feels equally awkward when you learn but it's much easier to follow the vast majority of online patterns and stitch illustrations if you do either craft right handed. And it's easier to find a RH tutor when you get stuck than a LH one! So give it a try that way first, you may be surprised at how quickly you pick it up.

  • I think knitting and using scissors (didn't both with left handed scissors when I went to school) are the only things I can do rh. Nobody could teach me to knit lh so it was right or nothing. I am sooooooooooo lh it's untrue but if you learn rh thats all you'll ever know.

another left hander here, I learnt to knit by sitting opposite and copying in a mirror image kinda way - but like I've said before I really struggle with getting the tension right and so cant knit properly anything of any use! I havent tried crochet but would like to

  • I am left handed and bought the book Crochet Unravelled. This shows left handed and right handed ways to hold the wool and hook.

Interestingly, I have mainly been a knitter (for 40 years!) and I had to look on youtube to check which way I knit. I found out that I knit right handed so it must have been my mum that taught me to knit. (Even though I am a 'strong' leftie) I don't think, however that I could crochet right handed.

  • Thanks for replying...I suppose I could try right handed but if it involves holding the hook(?) in the right hand, I'm not sure I'll cope!! I'll give it a bash though.

I'm glad others have taught themselves...hopefully I'll manage it too!

  • I've just ordered the crochet unravelled book off eBay due to the good reviews on Amazon. Can anybody tell me what basics I'll need to get started and I'll order those. I'm assuming it will be a hook - do they come in different sizes and is there a best one to start with? Also are there any specifics I need to know about yarn? Any recommendations for beginners?

    Thanks again.

To start with, the bigger the better. If you are just practising then either a 4, 5 or 6mm hook. The bigger it is, the larger the resulting 'hole' will be to push the hook through. To start with don't use dark coloured wool as it will be difficult to see the stitches. Best to use double knitting wool.
