Part time hours - when does job seekers and housing stop?

Am asking on behalf of a friend, they have been offered a part time job but is unsure of the amount of hours/salary they can earn before losing the benefits they currently get. She is single and renting a room, and worried she may not be able to survive if she loses the help she currently gets
Thanks

Its 16 hours for jsa and anything over that you get a reduced rate of jsa, not sure about other benefits.
  • As far as I know, and I'm no expert, your friend can work up to 16 hours while on JSA. The first £5 of earnings is disregarded and then every £1 above that is deducted off JSA.

ESA is different in that you can work up to 16 hours and earn up to £95 (I think) and keep your full benefit.

I'm in NI but I think the rules are the same. No doubt someone with more knowledge will come along.

    Don't know anything about HB.
  • JSA - can claim if working no more than 15 hours 59 minutes

JSA will reduce by 100% after a £5 earnings disregard and working less than £16 hours a week, although you can still sign on to get your NI conts, of earning less than £8000/year.

At £67ish/week (more if you have entitlement to disability premium in WTC when working over 16h/week), your HB will reduce by 76% of any additional income, meaning that when you start to pay tax/NI, you're losing 97%.

In other terms, you're probably better off not working, but I didn't tell you that.

Many people on low incomes claim HB/LHA to top up their income. Part time jobs are often the way forward for coming off benefits and becoming independent.
