Interviewer said she will make a decision today but hasn't called me.

Hello everyone!

I have been a regular visitor of the MSE website for a while now, however I have only just joined the forum. I would appreciate your comments regarding my problem below.

I had a job interview three days ago which I thought went well. I was told that the interviewers will make a decision today (Friday) and that they would like the new employee to start on Monday which is in 3 days. It's now 7.40pm and I still have not heard anything. Do they expect me to call them or is this their way of telling me I haven't been successful? The job is a marketing role for a company that provides luxury accommodation to tourists.

I know the reception desk is manned 24/7 but I doubt the people who interviewed me would still be in the building at 7.40pm on a Friday as I imagine they work more normal office hours (but do not know for sure). I do not have direct phone numbers/email addresses to the people who interviewed me, only the phone number for reception. What do I do? My gut instinct is telling me they have hired someone else, because if they really wanted me, they would definitely have called by now as the job is to start so soon. Nevertheless, I just want 'closure' - to know what's going on. Some people seem to think it is way too early to follow up but surely this rule does not apply to my situation as I know that they want the successful applicant to start so soon? At the same time, I do not want to ruin my chances or appear impatient in case there has just been a delay. What do I do?

But they never said she starts on monday, she rang the guy from the agency but he said he hadnt heard anything.

She is assuming she hasnt got it but theres that what if, at the back of her mind

Firstly well done for getting an interview.

I can appreciate your anxiety but you need to understand that the person that interviewed will have many other tasks to do. Recruiting is only one part of most peoples roles.

While the job is important to you and is all consuming, to the interviewer, there are other spects to their role, any one of which may have taken precident and require urgent attention, which means a decision about the post you were interviewed for takes second place. Unfortunate for you, that is the way business operates!

Additionally, the person that interviewed you may be off sick today, which means that the decision wont be made.

There is no point calling now. Its Friday evening. Try and put out of your mind and enjoy the weekend and call them on Monday.

  • Thank you for your replies.

phill99, thank you for your comments. You pretty much stated what I was thinking about doing myself. It's good to know to someone else is thinking along the same lines.

I will wait until Monday and keep applying for other jobs in the meantime. :)

Another possibility is that they have offered it to someone who was higher on the interview scores, but they haven't yet accepted or declined it.

True. We'll see what happens. I'm prepared both for the negative and positive answer!
