O2 Default Dispute

Please Help!
My partner and I are looking to get a mortgage. After reading on money saving expert that it is advisable to do your own Experian Credit Report we did so.
My partner has found a Default from O2 that is dated 2007 with an outstanding balance of £217. He was shocked to see this default as the rest of his credit history is good.
My partner never received and outstanding balance letters or debt notifications and it was never sent on to a debt collector. My partner paid his bills each month and at the end of the contract went to Pay as You Go, also with O2 as they sent him the sim card.
When calling O2 to find out why they had defaulted him, he was advised they could not see any details other than that he had requested a Pay as You Go sim , that they sent, yet they continued to run the contract for 12 months without sending any bills , notifications or sending it to a debt collecting agency?!
He was then told that they would sent to the relevant department a request for it to be deleted but the request has been refused without an explanation.
This alleged ''Default'' is making it harder and more stressful to find a mortgage.
What should we/can we do next?
Also should we pay the £217 (through gritted teeth) so it shows as settles?
Thanks

don't defaults drop off after 6 years, so no matter what the agency should removeDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Hi, yes they do drop off after 6 years , however we are applying for mortgages now and it is effecting our chances of getting one. It will be void in Dec 2013, I got the date incorrect in my previous post.0
