How do I defragg properly?

In an effort to speed up my computer, after running the CC cleaner and doing a malware scan I tried to defragg the hard drive.

I was able to see I had 19% defragmentation before starting, I shut down whatever software was unneeded (itunes, the internet, last fm..etc) and left overnight to defragg.
I came back the next morning to find everything was complete and I now have...
18% defraggmentation.

I've tried clicking on the file break down and then finding the various files. Despite being told that for example, the file has 34 fragments, when I click to defragg I am told there are no fragments.

Is there anyother way of doing this or improving on what I have?

Any idea what will? I've got no malware (apparently) and the CC cleaner didn't make any difference at all (apart from all my Chome paged sites vanished). Its not just the slowness, its the "not responding" messages and the page freezes which happen about 10 minutes after I start to use the computer and last a good 5 minutes, also very irritatingly it seems only if I try to do anything vaguely quickly- like type and email or type in a web address or search for something, I get the "not responding" messages....

How much RAM have you got? How many processes in the background have you got running that you might not need to be running?
  • download hddscan
    http://hddscan.com/
Exctact the files ,then double click on hddscan.exe

it will read the smart settings on your hard drive, (bad sectors etc)

from a simple point of view, if its green its ok, red =possibly bad (depends on whats red) copy and paste the results up here.

there are certain things you can do to help, follow closed's sticky at the top of the techie board first, and then see how it is. It would be useful to know what spec and OS the pc is, ie. ram, processor, hdd, and which version of windows you have.

Once this is known, it will be easier to advise...especially for any next steps after you've completed the sticky :)
