Amateur- how to make a patchwork quilt?

Hi

I'm a complete amateur at sewing- I takes me a while just to thread a needle!

But I REALLY want to create a patwork quilt for my 15-month son for Xmas, out of his old blankets, clothes or discarded teddies. So how do I go about it? What do I need? Any help please!

I need it really, really simple too, but I'm determined! :)
Up and onwards to the future!

  • are you sewing this by hand?

    stretchy fabrics i wouldnt recommend
if you have something you really want to include, i would applique it onto a less stretchy fabric

    squares are simplest to do
decide on size, remembering finished you loose and inch

IE you cut 4" squares, when you sew using 1/4" seam allowance, 4 sides of 1/4 makes you loose an inch

when you press your seams, press one row in one direction
press the next row in the opposite direction
they then "sandwich" together much easier

    i use bamboo batting
    its lovely to work with
    warm, and easy to wash

    think about binding
i shall look for a video for that, especially corners
but more the material you shall use
as you need enough to go all the way around the quilt
so if you are using something of his you can get a good length from dont cut it for squares
  • this is a good video to show you how to bind a quilt and make the binding

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZR6ls_IsIo

i would watch it a couple of times when you are ready to do it
it might not make much sense until you are actually doing it
it will fall into place :)

cut your squares (or whatever you are going to use)
lay them out on the floor
and rearrange until you are happy
then pick them up in rows
(i number each row with a wee piece of paper pinned on)
sew each row, then join your rows together
    you have a quilt top

then you need batting, and a back
    then its quilted
    then bound
