Landlord won't allow DFG

My husband and I are are both registered disabled and have recently been granted a DFG for an extension and wetroom. It turns out now, that my landlord is redeveloping the site we live on (there are 52 flats and our Bungalow on site). The landlord has told us that they won't allow the extension to happen (they aren't going to develop for at least 3 years and the council were talking about a prefab for that short time)

Also, when the new development is built, the landlord has said they won't allow us to have the extension there either. We are really stuck as to what we should do next.

Thanks

  • Sounds like you may have to look for another landlord.

Sorry to hear about your problem Annie.

I am inabled (don't like using word disabled) and it is one of the worst sides to being in renting. I need to move across country to get closer to my family & dread looking for somewhere.

    So good luck to you.

    - the Disabled Facilities Grant was awarded for that specific property over three months ago
    - your current landlords refused to accommodate your wishes over three months ago
    - you have tried legal / local authority routes to persuade your landlord without success

Your situation is you accept your current landlords offer of a new tenancy in the new build, albeit nothing remotely like your current level of accommodation. When you move back in to your new tenancy you carefully read the tenancy agreement and decide whether or not to request landlords permission for a wetroom conversion, and then re-apply for a DFG to cover the costs.

    or

You use the intervening three years to find an alternative dwelling anywhere in the country with a landlord who may accept a wetroom conversion and then re-apply for a DFG to cover the costs. I think you already know that you are never going to be able to get your wish with you current landlord, the fact of the matter is disabled [wheelchair] properties as a % of social dwellings availability at any point in time are about 4000/1. Your chances of getting an available let are slim and chances of a swap are zero. Accept the three years grace, and live the next three years productively.

    - start thinking about stay or go, do something / do nothing. Best of luck Annieuk.

  • Sounds like good reason to apply to the local authority for housing.
