I do rent, I've not looked into council tax benefit but will do.

combined for last year was £36k.
I did discuss the change of circumstances with working family tax credits but the just sent me out the standard form...! I will get back onto them about it.

After going through my finances and a long discussion with my partner we've found a few things we can cut back on to reduce outgoings, and will just struggle by until I go back to work in Feb. So you'll be glad to hear we've decided against the loan. Thanks to all for your comments (even if some were not really relevant). ;)

No loan = great idea! Have you put your details into entitledto? That will show you exactly what you are entitled to, it could be that you're eligible for housing benefit too, but this depends on your LHA etc. Write to tax credits and don't take no for an answer. I was over the limit due to the previous year, I applied, they said no. I wrote a letter with 'Change of circumstances' on the top, and on the envelope (I think there's a specific address you have to send it to, so do the google for that) and it was sorted so very easily. Good luck xx

I know you want to spent as much time with your baby as you can, but could you consider going back to work before February?

It won't be healthy for you or baby if you end up deep in debt which you can't afford to pay back.
