Hard disks under warranty

As computer hard disks get larger they also become more prone to tiny errors which can eventually damage the disk and sometimes lose you data. You can download software (each hard disk manufacturer has its own package) to detect these 'surface' errors. If any appear, check immediately if the drive is still in warranty. Drive models like the Seagate Barracuda and some Western Digital drives can have warranties up to 6 years! You just need to go to the manufacturer's site, type in your serial and you will find out if there is any warranty remaining.

The best thing about this, as I noticed recently with about four drives I sent back for my office, is that the companies don't make lower sizes any more (80gb, 120gb, etc), so if you send back one of these you usually get a much larger replacement! You certainly never get anything smaller.

I had a Western Digital drive fail on me. I couldn't run the software diagnostic as I couldn't get Windows to recognise the drive.

I went to the manufacturers site and entered the serial number and it came up that as the drive was OEM I had to go to the retailer for warranty claims...the retailer only offered a 12 month warranty.
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!
