C.A.R.S chasing debt already paid

I previously posted about Yes car insurance charging me a fee for not cancelling my car insurance before deadline period. They took £20 odd out of my account in January a few weeks before my direct debit should have gone out. I'd not cancelled until the day after the renewal deadline, so knew they were within their rights to take this money out of my account.

Anyway, fast forward to February and Yes wrote to me requesting the outstanding renewal fee. I wrote back to them confirming they'd taken this money out of my account in January and the matter was closed, I was now with another insurance provider. I then received the first in a succession of letters from CARS requesting the same amount which had been taken from my account in January. I wrote back enclosing copies of the correspondence between Yes and me. Yes then started ringing me. I told them again on the phone what I'd said in my letter. They told me that the money had been taken out of my account and then reimbursed into my account a few days later. This is not true. They've been ringing me on sometimes a daily basis leaving messages about this 'outstanding debt'. My problem is I cancelled my bank account in January and moved to a new bank. I don't have any records to prove this money went in/out of my account other than I know it went out and it never went in.

It may seem petty for £20 but I really, really object to having to pay again for something I've already paid for. I've come home tonight from work to a letter saying they are now going to send someone to my home. For me to get a copy of bank statements from my old bank account will cost me more than the amount CARS are saying is owed.

Can someone please advise me how I can deal with this?

  • I very much doubt they'll send someone round, but this is bordering on harassment now. I'd send them a recorded letter in the post telling them to leave you alone or take the matter to court (which they won't do) or else you will report them to the police for harassment.
