You can heat water on a ring of 9 tealights under a mesh grill, balance the grill on bits of wood so the kettle is just above the flames. It takes 20-25 mins but it makes hot drinks!0

Thanks for all the advice!
I have cheacked my tenancy agreement, and thankfully it says nothing about mobile gas or oil heaters. I will start looking for a super ser as suggested.
I put up thermal curtains last year, it made a big difference to the cosiness of the flat. I have just now put my spare duvet on the mattress and I will def check out the fleece blankets at Aldi! I'm afraid that hooking up an inverter to the central heating is way beyond my capabilities, and prob comes under the heading of altertations - which are forbidden in the tenancy agreement.
