Can I get a mortgage?

Hi all,

Thought I'd post on here as you all helped a lot when I wanted to get debt free :)

I got debt free around 2 months ago and now me and my partner are saving to buy a house. We will have saved up around 20k by Xmas next year.

Now my partners credit is perfect whereas mine I had a default and a few late payments. Since I have paid off the default and put a notice of correction and now everything is green. However I just paid for my credit score out of interest and it's 291! Which I know is awful. I have a credit card I put all my petrol on and pay in full each month. Is there anything else I can do to be mortgage worthy by the end of next year?

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to reply to this post :)

Max

I wouldn't concern yourself too much with the credit reference agency's score, it is irrelevant to a lender's scoring method.

Seeing a history of paying balances on time is worth a lot more to a prospective lender than being credit free, so the best you can do is keep on using credit, but continue to pay your cc balance in full each month, and keep the number of credit searches on your account to a minimum.

EDIT - are you on the electoral roll?

No i'm not. I did send the letter that you can get off here to the council but they said they were not adding anyone onto it as it has closed for the year. So I have to wait for the thing to come in the post and send it off.

    Thanks
  • I was going to say electoral roll, it does really help - also having a landline telephone number.

And just what the previous poster said - use of the credit card followed by paying it off in full every month.

Hopefully the savings you will have by then will also look positive to a potential lender

    Good luck!
