Im currently making a claim for repayment of overpaid income tax.....

I wanted to check my previous tax codes from previous years as ive never been sent a P2 or whatever they are telling my tax code for the forthcoming year....

Not only do i want to check what codes i was on but i want to check that this is the code that should have been issued to me because of my cicumstances at that time !

I do i check what i was actually on and what code i should have been on ?

Please help !

  • is it a P60 you mean? my employer gives me one at the end of every tax year. my tax code is also stated on my payslips so if you have any old ones have a look at them.

as for checking what your code should have been I have no idea i'm afraid :o

Yes, you need to locate your P60s - in fact anything that you can find that will help. The P60 will show your taxable income and the tax deducted for that tax year. That should be the starting point.

If you can not find anything at all, don't worry. Contact your local tax office. If you have a current payslip, then see if it has a three digit tax reference number on it followed by a / . Then use the following to locate the tax office.

Call them and explain the situation. I did this recently and managed to sort it out over the phone, corrected a couple of mistakes and had got a substantial tax rebate within about 4-6 weeks. Mind you it is their busy time of the year, so it may take a little longer.

Give them a call and see you how you go. You can always come back here for more advice depending how you get on.
