Basically, ive got to be there for 9am wednesday morning but ive just woken up now...
I fell asleep at 4pm today and woke up at 10pm...
Ive been nervous of starting this job, i want it plus, other stresses have messed up my seeping pattern.
I do have sleeping tablets but when should i take them? If at all?
How can i be there for wednesday morning, but not be tired? Because i'll have to be there a whole nine hours, and if ive had no sleep, nine hours with no sleep + first day = nightmare.
Erm...help?

  • You will have to grin and bare being tired. Set your alarm and get plenty of caffeine in you. You will adjust.

Not being fascetious but if that doesn't work I wouldn't worry too much. You won't have any problems at all sleeping Wednesday night!!! Provided you don't actually fall asleep at work on your first day (creates a lasting first impression but perhaps one you don't want to make) a laughing explanation that you couldn't settle the night before because you were so nervous of starting the new job usually goes down as understandable.

Don't take sleeping tablets - they make you more likely to oversleep! Don't drink alcohol - at most a SMALL nightcap but no more!

It takes time to adjust if you've been use to night-shift hours and are now starting a job with normal office hours. Your mind and eating patterns will fall in to place after a short while and the machine that is your body will adjust.

  • Eating pattern is very useful to set your sleeping pattern. It's something pilots do to compensate for jetleg.
Eat the relevant meal at the right time, so if you get up at 4pm - wait until 6pm and eat an evening meal. Don't have cereal.

But the above advice is about right. You only woke up 2.5 hours late, anyone can cope without that amount of sleep, just crack on. It's just a matter of routine, the following Monday you should be set.

OP woke at 10 PM! 14.5 hrs late... (or 9.5 hours early?!)

Staying awake all day today sounds like a good plan - although it's be a good idea to get to bed extra early tonight.
If you have trouble sleeping, get up and do something for 15 mins (NOT TV or computer-related), something like ironing, washing up etc, then try to sleep again. (Preferably this activity should be in a different room from your bedroom!)

It's a good idea to get your work clothes ready the night before, make packed lunch if necessary, other things like that so the next morning is much easier. I have also found it useful to allow adequate time in the morning for shower/breakfast/cigarette or whatever helps you set up for the day (the moment the alarm rings is horrific but this eases the start of the day lol).
I read somewhere recently that it takes about 3 weeks to fully adjust to a change in lifestyle/timetable. You'll settle into a routine much faster than this but it takes this long for all the body clock related systems to adjust or something... I only mention this as an encouragement to really stick at it for the first three weeks and it will get easier!

Well done on the new job and good luck

I was up at 7am this morning and Im on nights tonight at 8pm till 8am, that's going to be about 26 hrs on the go before I get back to bed. The human body is a very resilient machine and will take a bit of hammering as long as its not happening everyday. If you do wake up early then try your best to stay awake till at least 10pm after your first days work so that you will sleep enough but won't get up too early.

    Oh god.

Yes stay awake as long as possible. Go to bed at 8pm earliest I'd say.

    Good luck.

I'd avoid the sleeping tablets to be honest, Best plan of attack is don't eat late on at night, avoid caffeine in the evening, go to bed no earlier than 8pm as mentioned, try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDByPPcmM6U works for me when I have trouble getting over.
