Tax Credit overpayment

in Cutting tax
Hiya,
Short version:
Is a previous employer under any obligation to provide payslips to me which I have lost?
Long version:
I got a letter the other day saying that I received an overpayment of tax credits in the period 06/04/04 - 10/5/04. I phoned up and they said it was paid to me through my employer. The odd thing is that I had left the employer they stated in the February, two months earlier than these dates! There is another period when I apparently received tax credits through my employer (same one again!), but my P45 and P60 both state that my employer didn't give me any, but after moving house about three times since then and now having most of my life in storage, I can't find my payslips for that employer. Are they under any obligation to provide payslips to me which I now can't find?
Thanks a lot for any help
Stuart

Why does this not surprise me with the Tax Credit people
I'm not sure if your employer would be obliged - do you think there will be a problem in them doing so?
Have you explained the situation to the Tax Credit people already? The IR will have received a copy of your P45 when you left so that should prove your leaving date?
