Underpaid for years!?

I'm not sure what to do about this as I've clearly been very disorganised and stupid...

I've recently been through all my old P60s and they don't seem to match what I should have been being paid.

For example, say my salary is 25k, the P60 shows the total earnings for that year are 22k. In one year, even though my salary went up, it's less than the year before.

It has always seemed, month by month, correct when I check my wage slip. But I have to admit it I don't check it religously. And I have never looked closely at my P60 before. Yes. I know. Stupid.

Is there anything that could be causing this gap between what I was expecting and what I was paid, on my P60? ANd if not, where could I even start in claiming it back...?

I have obviously learnt a lesson from this. And I know I've been daft. But all advice would be welcome.

tax? student loan? could they be possibilities?
  • My student loan came out of my banck account and this figure is before tax. Will need to investigate futher I guess. My union and pension payments may make so sort of difference to the final total. But it seems like these differences are pretty big. Time to get the calculator and old wage slips out I guess. But if I find a difference, will I ever be able to get it back?? I work for a v big company.

In that case I would get in touch with the payroll department and ask them about it. If you have been underpaid you'll get the money back (I would think!).

When does your company do payrises / cost of living, if at all? Have you had any promotions?

Eg, you are on £21.5k in April, and then move up to £25k through a promotion. But you haven't earned £25k consistently through the year, so your P60 may well read £22k.

Hope you get it sorted. If it's an error (but obviously check first!), then you should ask for the money to be repaid.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
