Lift-sharing

I've noticed on facebook that liftsharing week is coming up - from the 1st-5th October.
I've not used it before but it looks like a way to save money and fuel simply by sharing cars with people going in the same direction.
Questions: has anybody ever used liftshare? What has been your experience with it? Would you recommend it?

The week is run by Liftshare.com but there also seems to be many other similar projects out there, such as National Carshare and Freewheelers.
If anyone has had better experiences with one or the other, that would be great too!0 -
Some time ago IIRC there was a problem with insurance, something to do with using car for 'reward'; can't remember how/if it was sorted.
However you need to check with your insurance company.0
