I'm also doing well at not throwing things now. I have started up my compost bin, so all peelings, egg shells, bits of paper, garden refuse etc are going in there.
We are better now at eating (not throwing) the fruit we get, and with meal planning and weekly visits to the vege shop for ONLY THAT WEEK's veges - I have not thrown a single vege for ages. :j

I also freeze just about everything - epecially bread (both as slices for sarnies/toast and as breadcrumbs from the crusts), cakes, that sort of thing that takes 2 of us too long to get through. My freezer list on the door (magnetic white board sheet) keeps track of what we need to eat for food rotation.

Milk comes from the milkman (recycle glass bottles)
I use bag for life, but any plastic bags that end up here get reused as bin liners, then sent to the recycling.

I don't buy ready meals, so packaging is minimum. Fruit and veg comes from the farm shop - using bag for life. meat from the butcher so a plastic bag per meat, but no plastic cartons (like the supermarkets).

We recycle glass, tin, cardboard, paper, plastic bottles and peelings.

I put my wheelie bin out every 3 to 4 weeks with 2 bags in it.

My biggest problem now is the bin (indoors) getting smelly before it is full...as it takes so long to fill it up!

  • Now the week is at an end as I started on the 1st I have totted it all up and the waste this week is £1.10 I compost everything that the dog doesn't have(I won't count that but there wasn't anything)and I give anything suitable to the g.pigs. I have 2 pots for kitchen waste. One for the "pigs" and one for compost.
How much was your waste all of you who took part? Let's aim to reduce it by 20% next week!

  • I'd love to revive this thread as we have been a little slack lately on the bread-leaving a slice or two in the packet at the bottom of the bread bin. Been rather disappointed with some of the fruit too as some just did'nt taste nice but Im sure I could have perked it up by stewing it or something. Going to start my waste list again and laminate it to save paper and make it sturdy to write on.

  • Hi there  There's currently a thriving thread on Old Style - Don't throw food away challenge.

Would you like to go and join that one (I'm sure you'll be made very welcome ;) ).

I'm going to close this one so that we don't have 2 similar threads running, which might cause confusion.
