I seem to remember when we applied to change our bank account the problem seemed to be that we'd had no credit checks. Apparently not having any seems suspicious too, goodness knows why.
I was told the same once as well that not having a credit check wasnt a good thing

Yeah they've given me a credit limit already...hmm. No mention of any credit application and my rights.... agree it may be 'slightly illegal'.

    If you can have that.

May I ask why people bump competitions? It's very irritating to have them move out of order, especially if you've missed a few days and are working through them in order. I can't see that it makes it any more likely that someone who's missed it before will suddenly now see it, but there's a very good chance that people will end up voiding their entry by entering twice.

Without wishing to annoy anyone by causing this comp to go back up to the top of the list again, some info which might help blueparasol:

Like you, I don't know why people bump comps  but there is a way of keeping them in order so that the bumpers don't mess you up.

If you go down to the bottom of the page when you're looking at the list of comps, click on Thread Start Time and Descending, then you'll see the comps in the order they were started (most recent at the top) and they won't jump around as people reply to them. I find this helps me keep track of them (and maybe as more people use this way, it might get others out of the habit of bumping comps :) )

Also, to keep track of which comps you've already entered so that you don't accidentally enter twice and void your entry, quite a few people click on the Thanks button when they enter the comp.
The Thanks button will then disappear, so if you look at that comp again you can tell you've already entered it (as the Thanks button won't be there).
That's what people mean when they say to "check your thanks" if a duplicate comp has been posted - they're saying to check the original post and see if you Thanked it. If you did, that was probably because you entered it

    hope this helps

May I ask why people bump competitions?
If you notice this particular one was originally posted more than 4 months ago & the last post made to it on 07-04-2007. If I hadn't bump it, it would be languishing on page 143 in the list - screenshot. How many new compers would be visiting this page?

Edit: LizB62 has made a good point about them getting bumped each time someone makes a reply - 'they won't jump around as people reply to them'. So really anyone who replies to the posts is 'guilty' of bumping them up, aren't they?
It's very irritating to have them move out of order, especially if you've missed a few days and are working through them in order.
Far worse things happen in an average day to get 'very irritated' about one would've thought. Some perspective required perhaps?
I can't see that it makes it any more likely that someone who's missed it before will suddenly now see it
This isn't the purpose of bumping. It's for the newer people who wouldn't have seen it before, & may never have done.
but there's a very good chance that people will end up voiding their entry by entering twice.
You're relatively new so you may not know that there's a very simple way around this. Many (me included) apply it with very good results. Simply thank the OP (press the thanks button, posting not necessary) & there's little/no chance of entering twice. 15-20 new thanks have appeared since it was bumped - 56 people in all (at time of posting this) have a readily available visible record that they have now entered this.

Btw, I only bump competitions that have an expiry date way in the future & that hasn't been posted to in many months (also, this may be my first comp bump ever!). If you've been affected by posters bumping up threads for no good reason, then you should consider taking the points you've raised here to those posts. I hope this clears up the whole issue :). G

The best way I find to keep on top of the competitions is to subcribe to the competitions time forum

    If you go to :

Home » Forums > Bargain Buys, Sassy Shopping and Fantastic Freebies » Competitions Time

Then click on forum tools - subscribe to this thread - select daily updates by email - add subscription

You then get an email just after midnight each day with the previous days competitions, it lists all the new threads at the top and then updated ones at the bottom, I ignore the updated ones and work my way down the list of new threads opening up the ones I want to enter in new tabs

I also click the thanks button and the threads I have visited turn purple in my email so I can easily tell which I have visited and entered

Unfortunately occasionally it doesn't arrive and I don't know why  so you have to look through all the threads yourself

Will add this message to the Comps Tips - New Thead Help Needed sticky too as I think it saves me a lot of time :)

Heres an extract of the one I have received tonight :

    Dear littleange_com,

You are subscribed to the forum Competitions Time, there have been 130 new thread(s) and 53 updated thread(s).

Common sense would suggest that a newbie should start from the earliest post, on the assumption that they were likely to collect the vast majority of the comps in the shortest time possible without losing too many to the expiry date.

Indeed, and I shan't be bothering to visit this particular one after this for precisely that reason. However, bumping is different, IMO, from people posting comments about the comp or pointing out that the comp has been posted before - they usually occur within the first day or so of the first post, not 4 months down the line, so there's not really a chance of people forgetting that they'd entered that particular comp.

Ah, pot, I don't believe you've met kettle. I can't see how describing such an incident as 'very irritating' (a fairly mild description) demanded such a sarcastic reply. Perhaps you're just particularly sensitive to the term?

They would if they started from the oldest posts and worked their way forward. If they can't be bothered to do that, I don't see why we should bump posts for them. Don't get me wrong - I'm sure you had the best of intentions, but please note that several people have thanked me for raising this issue, whereas you've had one thanks (and that was an accident - I meant to press the quote button - doh!:o)

Assumptions, assumptions. Actually, I've been here for many months (I just prefer to use different IDs for different parts of the site). The thanks button is all very well, but it means you have to be logged in to use it, remember to click it, and if the post is bumped, to then open an email that you wouldn't have done if it had been in the right order. We all have time pressures on us, and I'm sure most of us want to enter as many comps as possible. Why waste time checking comps we've already done?

Thanks, that's useful to know. I do use the ascending/descending button, but wasn't aware that it could be sorted by thread start time.

Thanks to little_ange too, although I think I get enough emails!

Never did one with me. How do you know? Did it say something?

Right at the bottom of the terms/conditions it says the following (yawnsome I know - but confirms it will run credit checks basically!)

    Data Protection

<FORM name=regtandcpopupform>We will make searches about you at credit reference agencies who will supply us with credit information, as well as information from the Electoral Register. The agencies will record details of the search whether or not credit is granted. We may use credit-scoring methods to assess your application and to verify your identity. Credit searches and other information which is provided to us and/or the credit reference agencies, about you and those with whom you are linked financially may be used by Sander & Kay Limited and other companies if credit decisions are made about you or other members of your household. This information may also be used for debt tracing and the prevention of money laundering as well as the management of your account and also for our marketing.
The following paragraph will only apply to you if at the point of application for an account you indicate/indicated you wish to be treated as financially independent:
Information held about you by the credit reference agencies may be linked to records relating to those with whom you are financially linked. For the purposes of this application you will be treated as financially independent and your application will be assessed without reference to any "associated" records, although you recognise that this may adversely affect the outcome of your application. You believe that there is no information relating to those with whom you are financially linked that is likely to affect our willingness to offer credit to you. You authorise us to check the validity of this declaration with credit reference agencies and if we discover any associated records, which would affect the accuracy of this declaration we may decide not to proceed with the application on this basis.

I have read and understood the above paragraph and would like to be assessed on this basis. <INPUT type=checkbox value="" name=TDPOptOut>
We may also use your information, including shopping habits, to open and run your credit account including payment recovery, fraud prevention and debtor tracing and for our marketing. We may share your information with other organisations. We or they may contact you for marketing purposes by mail, telephone, e-mail or otherwise. If you do not wish to be contacted by other organisations for marketing purposes please tick the box on the Registration page.
If we enter a credit agreement with you we will also supply details of your agreement with us to the credit reference agencies, as well as ongoing details of your account and how you manage it. If you do not repay on time or in full we will tell the credit reference agencies who will record details of the debt. All this information will be seen by other organisations carrying out later searches.
You have the right of access to your personal records held by credit and fraud agencies. We will supply their names and addresses upon request to Data Protection Compliance Officer at FREEPOST NAT 22671, Manchester, M60 5YW. We, the credit reference agencies and fraud prevention agencies may also use the records for statistical analysis about credit, insurance and fraud.
We may make periodic searches of Group records, credit reference and fraud prevention agencies to manage your account with us, to take decisions regarding credit, including whether to make credit available or to continue to extend existing credit. These searches will not be available to other lenders for credit assessment purposes.

So basically - yes it does do credit checks!
These can affect you, in my experience as follows:
    1) banks like to see some credit history before granting credit themselves to see that you have borrowed and paid back successfully - if you have no credit, then they can't tell how risky they are.
    2) if you have LOTS of searches, this is seen as negative, as it appears that you are searching around for credit. Nobody wants to lend to somebody that has TOO much credit, or has possibly been declined credit.

I only know this because I spent 10 years underwriting mortgages.

I know this information is some months after the question was first posed, but it might be of use to someone when deciding whether a competition is worth entering on the basis of credit checks.:EasterBun
