Mobile Worker - what can I claim?

I understand that I can claim the VAT back from food etc purchased while I am out of the office. Is this correct?

Thanks

I presume you are not vat registered so no you can't.

You would normally do an expense claim and your employer would reimburse you in full, they then claim back any applicable vat.
    ..........Insert amusing tagline here..........

I'm not VAT registered and claim mobile worker's allowance..
  • I am PAYE.

I use a company car, but I understand that if I used a private car and got paid a rate less than 40P, I could claim the tax on the difference back from the HMRC.

My company won't pay for food out of the office..... But I understand I can claim the tax or VAT back on some items used in the course of by work.

BTman, how do you do it? Is there a form and do you have anymore information on this?

    Thanks

I too am PAYE, it's all done through my company (bt), they take around £104 a month from my salary before tax, then add a £94 tax free sum to my salary after tax, so it saves me a few quid a month...

You can't claim VAT back unless you are VAT registered! Or perhaps doing a self-build home.....

I think you must be thinking about subsistence claims for which there are different tax-free rates that you can claim when you are out of the office for 5 hours, 10 hours or overnight....However normally that is direct with you employer, not certain whether you can do that on your self assesment return....

Sorry to say you can't claim any VAT back as a private individual - you must be VAT registered (or constructing a self build or visiting from outside the EC - but that's another story). Also, you'll find that sandwiches and the like are VAT free, unless you eat in a cafe.
However, you are correct in thinking that you may be able to claim back the tax on your mileage in a private car if your mileage rate is less than 40p- this relates to your P11D benefits.
