Leapfrog vs Vtech?

Hi,
I'm looking at Christmas presents for my 4 yr old granddaughter and am looking at the Vtech mobigo2 and the Leapfrog leappad 2 or explorer. I don't know an awful lot about this technology and don't want to spend out a lot of money on the wrong kit.
I'm assuming the mobigo and explorer are very similar and the leappad2 is more advanced going on the pricing. I'm wondering if the leappad2 is the better buy from leapfrog as it's the newest and I'm not sure if that means availability for explorer stuff will be reduced as the leappad takes over - or am I completely wrong?
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated!
